Telephones

Get started with public communication system when in France- whether it is to make a call back home or to search for a pizza delivery near-by, you will find help in this section.

Calling France from abroad:

Dial 00 33 (International Dialing Code for France) followed by the telephone number.

If the telephone number you wish to call is something like 01 43 25 19 87 (land line) or 06 45 78 96 54 (mobile), then you will dial 00 33 1 43 25 19 87 or 00 33 6 45 78 96 54.

However, if you are calling from the US or Canada, you will dial 011 33 43 25 19 87 or 011 33 6 45 78 96 54.

Calling abroad from France:

To call India: Dial 0091 followed by the Indian telephone number.

For other destinations, Consult International Dialing Codes

Calling within France:

All telephone numbers in France, land line or mobile, have ten digits prefixed by 0.

While calling anywhere in France, dial the number as it is eg. 01 43 25 19 87 or 06 45 78 96 54. There are no separate regional or city codes.

Searching for a telephone number on the internet:

A fast and free way to search for telephone numbers is through Online Yellow Pages (when searching for Services like Restaurants, Boutiques, Cinemas etc.). Write the name of the Business/ Service you wish to search for in 'Quoi, Qui' (what, who) and its location eg. Champs Elysees or pincode in 'Où (where).

Online White Pages can be used to search for Individuals. Write the name of the person in 'Qui' (who).

Searching for information by phone:

If you are stuck somewhere without an internet connection, it is possible to dial a service provider to ask for Information.

Since April 2006, as many as 19 commercial service providers offer the 'Information Search' facility using a telephone. One could access this by dialling 118 000, 118 007, 118 218, 118 712 etc.

Remember that these numbers are 'surtaxé' which means that even if you are using a service provider (Land line or Mobile) that offers free local calls, Dialling a 'Search' facility is charged extra to your bill.

'Surcharged' telephone numbers or 'numéros surtaxés':

If you are calling a number in France that starts with 08, chances are that the number is surcharged. It means that you need to pay an additional tariff per minute to call that number. Most of these surcharged numbers belong to enterprises or companies that engage in online commerce, after-sales, maintenance, hotline assistance etc.

The charges vary as per the companies and the operators. The meter starts from the 1st second of the call and often to the frustration of the caller, a few precious minutes are wasted by an automated voice-over message asking you to press the options 1, 2, 3 for this and that or wait for the operator.

Read more about numbers that are surcharged.
