Champs-Elysees Christmas Lights & Market

Paris Illumine Paris

Christmas lights on the most beautiful avenue in the world Champs Elysees will come to life on November 23rd, 2009. This year, it will be the actress Charlotte Gainsbourg, in the presence of Bertrand Delanoë who will inaugurate the Christmas lights in fuschia. The lights will be on all evenings till January 10th, 2010. Using the energy saving lights, the budget for Xmas lights at the Champ-Elysees is down to 8000€ compared to 60,000€ for earlier years, as per Paris municipality website. This means less than 150€ per day for the cost of decking up Champs-Elysées in lights for Christmas.

Boutiques, showrooms, restaurants and other establishments on the Champs have already decorated their windows for the pleasure of visitors in addition to the Avenue de Saint Ouen, Ternes Village, la rue Vieille du Temple and the place des Abbesses. Under the operation 'Paris Illumine Paris', there would be as many as 125 streets covering 200 kms that will be lit with Christmas lights and decorations.

Given the mounting costs, the allocation by Paris municipality for Christmas lights on the streets has been reduced to 750,000 € from 1.1 Mn € even though the global budget of lights for Paris stays stable at 2.5 Mn €. This meant more contribution from 80 participating association of shop owners and professionals.

From November 20th onwards, around 170 chalet like stalls will be open for the second year of Christmas Market at the round point of Champs Elysees right up to the Place de la Concorde.

Champs- Elysées can be reached by Metro Station: Franklin D. Roosevelt on Line 1 and 9.
