Paris is celebrating the 150th anniversary of the creation of its 20 districts/ 'arrondisements' this year. There is an exhibition, a number of conferences and scientific talks around the subject to mark the occasion.

In 1860, following the imperial decree of May 26th, 1859 and the law of 6th and 16th June, 1858, the boundaries of Paris were extended to include the eleven neighbouring communes of Auteuil, Passy, Les Batignolles, Montmartre, La Chapelle, La Villette, Belleville, Charonne, Bercy, Vaugirard and Grenelle. Thus the number of districts increased from 12 to 20, which is maintained till present date.
