Conference: European Artists and Painters of Awadh in the court of the Nawâbs of Lucknow

The paintings that thrived under the aegis of the Nawâbs of Lucknow between 1760 and 1860 is in the image of their opulent courts. To the pompous portraits of the sovereigns of Lucknow done by the European artists (T. Kettle, J. Zoffany, R. Home) hosted at their courts- where they introduced the vogue and the canons of Indian princely portraits à l'European- respond the delicate and gleaming miniature paintings by the Awadh painters (Mihr Chand, Mîr Kalân Khân, Faizullâh), having come from the Mughal court of Delhi to put their talents at the service of the prodigious monarchs of one of the most brilliant courts of North India.

La peinture qui s’épanouit sous l’égide des Nawâbs de Lucknow entre 1760 et 1860 est à l’image de cette cour opulente, flamboyante et cosmopolite. Aux pompeux portraits des souverains de Lucknow peints par les artistes européens (T. Kettle, J. Zoffany, R. Home) accueillis à leur cour – où ils introduisirent la vogue et les canons du portrait princier indien à l’européenne – répondent les délicates et chatoyantes miniatures des peintres de l’Awadh (Mihr Chand, Mîr Kalân Khân, Faizullâh), venus pour certains de la cour moghole de Delhi mettre leur talent au service des monarques prodigues de l’une des cours les plus brillantes de l’Inde du nord.
