Opéra Java - Javanese Variation on the Ramayana
Indonesian stage director and filmmaker, Garin Nugroho presents the Ramayana Odyssey through a fresco blending gamelan orchestra, classic tembang chanting, traditional and Western costumes, theatre and visuals. By addressing current issues in Indonesia through a religious journey transmitted for thousands of years by sacred theatre and traditional dancing, this operatic performance gives a new decidedly contemporary dimension to the legendary episode of the abduction of Sita. Through a riveting love triangle between two men and a woman, the story of « The abduction of Sita» celebrates Indonesian creativity and voice and culture diversity.

Pour la première fois en France, le musée du quai Branly présente 8 représentations exceptionnelles du spectacle Opera Java , une adaptation actuelle et originale de L'enlèvement de Sita, un des célèbres passages de l'épopée du Ramayana.
Mise en scène par le cinéaste indonésien, Garin Nugroho qui l'avait déjà adapté pour le cinéma, cet opéra contemporain mêle orchestre gamelan, chant classique tembang, musique pop, costumes traditionnels et occidentaux, théâtre et projections vidéo. Abordant les thèmes actuels de la société indonésienne à travers cette épopée religieuse transmise depuis des millénaires par le théâtre sacré et la danse traditionnelle, ce spectacle opératique donne une nouvelle dimension, résolument contemporaine, à l’épisode légendaire de l’enlèvement de Sita. Prétexte à un passionnant triangle amoureux entre deux hommes et une femme, l’histoire de « L’enlèvement de Sita » célèbre la créativité et la diversité des voix et des cultures en Indonésie.
