Renoir au XXe Siècle

Pierre-Auguste Renoir (1841-1919), a leading French artist of the impressionist movement, said this of own work in 1913 'I have just begun to know to paint. It has taken me more than 50 years to come to this result which is not yet complete.'

Renowned painters such as Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, Pierre Bonnard and Maurice Denis professed their admiration for the master. Amongst his contemporary and friends like Paul Cézanne and Claude Monet, he remains an inspiration and a reference point for the younger generation of artists.

A master in portraying feminine sensuality, his portraits such as 'the large bathers' (Les Grandes Baigneuses, 1887, Musée d’Orsay, Paris) are inspired by South of France that he frequented from 1890. Renoir has not hesitated to limit the theme of his paintings, preferring instead to explore different techniques using the same subject.

Exhibitions such as 'Renoir’s Landscapes 1865-1883' (London-Philadelphia-Ottawa 2007-08) or 'Renoir’s Portraits' (Ottawa-Chicago-Fort Worth 1997-98) have exhibited several of the artist's works. But many of his works from later years have not been a part of a public display or study. Studying this time period, the exhibition brings together more than a hundred works- paintings, drawings, sculptures- from private and public collection from all over the world.

This exhibition is being organized with a collaborative effort of RMN, Musée d'Orsay, Los Angeles County Museum of Arts and the Philadelphia Museum of Arts (See exhibition credits for details). The same exhibition will be presented at the Los Angeles Museum from Feb 14th- May 9th, 2010 and at the Philadelphia Museum from June 12th- September 5th, 2010.
